Today, I want to talk about why so many Japanese people have difficulty speaking English. In Japanese they have a saying which is called, “English allergy.” I have been in Japan over 20 years and I must say that the English ability of many Japanese people has dramatically increased. There are many great English speakers. However, still so many Japanese people have trouble speaking English in spite of studying English in school from a young age.  Why is this? Well, I think the main reason is that in Japanese society, a teacher is highly respected and has somewhat of a high social status. The word for teacher is Sensei, which literally means, born before me. So, I’m not criticizing Japanese culture. Anyone who knows me, knows I love Japan, but this idea of the Sensei teaching you English is a big problem. Speaking English is about communication, which is like playing catch. Throwing the ball back and forth. However, instead of catching the ball, many Japanese people try to hit the ball and end up striking out most of the time. Some of you may be thinking, oh, the student should become the catcher. No, because the catcher must wait for the Teacher or Pitcher to throw the ball. The student should be come the pitcher! So, all you English teachers out there. Become the catcher. Empower your students to take charge of the class. Teachers, become the catcher and guide your students to success.

Until next tomorrow, happy teaching and have a great day!

Bye!
